Nort Note

It’s a busy and FUN week here in Faribault with Heritage Days ’22 in full swing! What a great job getting this celebration together by the Heritage Days Committee. For Faribault’s 150th Anniversary of Incorporation some extra fun has been added to include a super-sized fireworks display at Alexander Park on Wednesday the 15th at 10:00PM. Click here for the full schedule of activities!

During this week the Chamber has the privilege to help host a delegation from our German sister city of Wurzburg this week. Lord Mayor Mr. Christian Schuchart, Councilor Ms Sandra Vorlova and Ms Anuschka Heid from the International Office of Wurzburg will be joining many of the Heritage Days ceremonies and activities during the week.

The relationship with Wurzburg is an example of Faribault’s history of looking out for others. Bishop Henry Whipple and Alexander Faribault played a key role in supporting innocent and coerced Native Americans. In fact – their advocacy helped save 265 Dakotas from the gallows. Alexander Faribault donated land to the State of Minnesota to make homes for the State Academies for the Deaf, Blind and otherwise compromised citizens. There are many other stories of how Faribault is a genuinely kind and caring community in our very roots. This excerpt from Wurzburg Online explains how our sister city relationship began.

Foster town - Faribault, Minnesota, USA

Foster town since 1949

Population : 23,400

Adoption? In the hard post-war years 1947 to 1950, Dorothy Beebe, the wife of the general of the Military Post Würzburg and president of the American women’s club, managed to found an aid program with Faribault’s citizens for the children of Würzburg, who were needy due to the aftermath of the war.

On 28 April 1949, the city of Faribault announced officially the adoption of Würzburg with the signing of the document by their mayor.

Würzburg has thanked Dorothy Beebe for her exceptional commitment by giving her a wedding cup. This wedding cup was given back to the City of Würzburg in September 2005 by the Beebe’s son – as a sign of our shared past!

The Chamber is proud to be serving this community. We’re working hard to do our part in continuing the great American Story of Faribault, Minnesota.

Car Cruise Ins Bring Summer Traditions to Downtown Faribault

Warm weather is finally here and Faribault Main Street Downtown Car Cruise organizers are ready to kickoff the season on May 20! Pull out your pride and joy vehicle and join the fun!

An orange vehicle and a blue vintage vehicle on a historic downtown street

The last several years, the car cruises have seen record numbers of vehicles, the Fleck’s beer delivery truck, which is currently undergoing restorations, the U of M Formula SAE vehicle and the U of M Solar vehicle, plus of course, a great selection of cars, trucks, and motorcycles. It is a great combination of history, innovation, and style all in one place.

The Faribault Main Street hosts a Car Cruise Night bringing in a wide array of cars. This year’s car cruise dates are May 20, June 17, July 15, Aug 19, and September 16. Whether you are into muscle cars, custom restorations, old trucks, motorcycles, Model As, fun details, hood ornaments, tuners or special interest, there is something for everyone. You can grab a bite to eat, and Jamie Jensen can be found playing music on Central Avenue as people stroll and take in the amazing cars parked in downtown Faribault.

It’s always a fun evening, and the cars that people bring are rare, interesting showpieces. Some vehicles make repeat appearances throughout the summer, but there are also new cars and trucks to check out. Hope to see you there!

Faribault Downtown Micro Grant Program Announced

Call for entrepreneurs and Business Ideas

The Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Faribault Economic Development Authority is excited to announce the Downtown Micro Grant program. This program, now in its fourth year, is open to both proposed businesses and existing businesses in the Historic District. Awards range from $500 to $5000 and serves as a great resource for a beginning business.  Applications will be available online or at the Chamber of Commerce office effective immediately, and will be accepted until June 1, 2022

The Downtown Micro Grant program will be administered by the Chamber’s successful Main Street Organization.  A notable component of the application process is the business counseling/coaching connection each applicant has the opportunity to receive from the Small Business Development Center free of charge.   Awards are given based on the merit of the final plans. In the past three years, 21 businesses have benefited, and a total of $75,000 awarded.

Nort Johnson, President/CEO of the Faribault Chamber noted “Entries will be connected with Small Business Development Center and SCORE resources to really examine and complete a business plan.”

Faribault Main Street Coordinator, Kelly Nygaard, said “These Micro Grant funds have the ability to be a catalyst for growth, innovation, and success in downtown Faribault. Faribault Main Street is delighted to have the opportunity to partner with the EDA to administer this program and foster entrepreneurism!”

The Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism’s Main Street Committee is thrilled to offer this opportunity. Chamber President/CEO, Nort Johnson notes that, “We’re excited to see how many more business models we can help support the idea of being part of our fabulous downtown.”

“We believe both the program and the collaboration with the Faribault Main Street have proven to be successful, and we are excited to see how the 2021 grants spur additional activity and growth in our downtown.” Said Deanna Kuennen, City of Faribault Community and Economic Development Director.

Preliminary business ideas must be submitted by June 1, 2022 to be considered. Go to the Faribault Main Street Facebook page, faribaultmainstreet.org or phone the office at 507.334.4381 for more information.

Nort Note

It’s been a bit of an emotional roller coaster the last few weeks around the office, and I’m reminded that perspective is what helps us manage through the lows. My perspective right now comes from the knowledge that as we go about our work and home lives there are hundred of thousands of our fellow humans who have been violently evicted from their homes and from their communities in eastern Europe. I will count my blessings and pray for peace in our world.

Let’s start with a state-wide “low”. The Minnesota legislature FAILED to pass a most important piece of simple and straight forward legislation that everyone agreed was not just important but critical for our business community. The Unemployment Insurance Fund was depleted and then some during the pandemic leaving a billion-plus dollar deficit. By law that deficit must be remedied or an additional business tax kicks in for Minnesota businesses. Keep in mind that we are already the 4th highest taxed state and that we’ve already lost several businesses to competing states over the tax issue. Also keep in mind that more than 30 other states used their federal COVID assistance funds to fix their deficits. Minnesota has those funds available yet has let this obscene situation spiral downward. The deadline was missed, and a double-digit tax increase is now in effect for 1st quarter taxes. Where does the responsibility for this incredible disservice land? I believe on the culture that has been celebrating divisiveness instead of rallying together for best outcomes.

Now on to a couple of community blessings in the last weeks. Our farm and ag-business friends gathered at the American Legion for our Agri-Business Brunch on Ag-Day. This committee is special to us. One of the key functions is Ag in the Classroom. A couple of our volunteers go to third grade classes in our community and share with the students the basics of bacon, hamburgers and other farm output that they can relate to. I guess that what we do is give the kids perspective on their food! The event always has the feel of a reunion, and the close-knit nature of hard-working people permeates the air – along with the smell of the Legion’s famous egg-bake. Great speakers and proud sponsors took turns at the podium and attendees lingered long after the program shaking hands and catching up on all the important news and happenings.

Our Flannel Formal drew around 500 participants to our beautiful downtown to enjoy music, hotdish and a lot of plaid comraderies! It was great to see so many old friends as well as first timers from surrounding communities. My friend Rob and I were visiting later during the event, and he marveled at the idea that after 7 of these events where it’s crowded, and alcohol is being consumed that not once has there been a fight. After some thoughtful analysis I wondered if the idea that because everyone was united in flannel there was more tolerance for the minor conflicts of line cutting, spilled drinks from being bumped into and the guy in front of you who took the last scoop of the best hotdish. Perhaps we need a world-wide flannel party. Better yet – we need our legislators to have a flannel party.
