A2. Map of the Purfürst surname Research Area
in Germany
A2. Map of the Purfürst surname Research Area
in Germany

The Author of this website conducted a research trip to Germany in the year 2000. This map identifies the heart of the research area.

The research area is located in the southern most part of the German state of Thuringen near the border with The Czech Republic.

Advance arrangements had been made to reside with a Purfürst family in their guest house in the village of Finkenmuhle (Finch Mill). Their home was used as a location from which daily research excursions were made. Eventually the records of 62 churches were examined with family information gathered on 2430 individuals.

See the Newsletter Archives for more details concerning this research trip

A3. St. John the Baptist Evangelical Church,
Neustadt an der Orla, Germany.
A3. St. John the Baptist Evangelical Church,
Neustadt an der Orla, Germany.

This picture of St. John the Baptist Evangelical church was taken by the Author during a year 2000 research trip to Neustadt, Germany. Many Purfürst family members who emigrated to America once lived in and around the village in which this church is located. The parish baptism, marriage and burial registers, dating back to 1600, revealed considerable information on our ancestors.

In 1294 the Landgraf Albrecht von Thuringer (The Count Albrecht Thuringa) and his wife Elisabeth, the widowed Countess of Arnshaugh, built a chapel in Neustadt and dedicated it to John The Baptist. Although having since undergone a number of alterations, the structure seen here was completed in 1534 and is said not to have changed since.

The Lutheran church of St. John the Baptist was the family parish for the Purfürst family groups listed below.

* ILLINOIS, Cook County - Arno Walter Purfürst and Wilhelmine Purfürst
* INDIANA, Fountain County - Carl Friedrich August Purfürst and Johann Friedrich Purfürst.
* MINNESOTA, Rice County - Karl Friedrich Ernst Purfürst.
* MINNESOTA, Steele County - Carl Friedrich Herman Purfürst.
* MISSOURI, St. Louis County - Johann Friedrich Jacob Purfürst.
* NEW JERSEY, Essex County - Johann David Ernst Purfürst, Christiana Paulina Purfürst, Robert Richard Purfürst and Ida Francisca Purfürst.
* TEXAS, Harris County - Ernst August Purfürst.
* FINLAND, Helsinki - Carl Wilhelm Alfred Purfürst

See the individual Histories for the geographical locations associated with the families for more information on the family groups.

See the History of St John's the Baptist church for more information on the parish.

See the History of Neustadt, Germany for more information on the village where the church was located.

A4. Parish records at the St. John the Baptist Church,
Neustadt an der Orla,Germany.

This picture of the parish record office within the St. John the Baptist Evangelical church was taken by the Author during a year 2000 research trip to Neustadt, Germany.

Seated at the desk is the retired minister of the church, Frau Eva Schädler. Behind her are cabinets containing a portion of the four centuries of baptism, marriage and burial records that she reviewed on our behalf in order to identify the hundreds of Purfürst ancestors and their spouses that attended the church over the years.

None of what you see and read on this website could have been possible without her sincere and dedicated assistance.

A5. The Alter within the St. John the Baptist Church,
Neustadt an der Orla, Germany.
A5. The Alter within the St. John the Baptist Church,
Neustadt an der Orla, Germany.

This picture of the alter within the St. John the Baptist Evangelical church was taken by the Author during a year 2000 research trip to Neustadt, Germany.

In 1511 the Neustadt City council traveled to Leipzig and in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder ordered an alter for the church. In June 1513 the alter pieces were delivered from Wittenberg and assembled in the church.

Both the alter and its maker are significant. Lucas Cranach (1472-1553), a leading painter in Saxony, was one of the most important and influential artists in the 16th-century art. In 1505 he was appointed as court painter to elector Frederich the Wise of Saxony. He resided in the city of Wittenburg where he remained for 45 years, serving three different electors (Kurfursten).

Dr Martin Luther was teaching at the University of Wittenburg at the time of the Protestant Reformation and the two became friends. Cranach’s portraits of Luther helped form Luther’s image and Lucas became the chief propagandist for the Protestant’s cause.

The Cranach alter in the Neustadt church is a tryptich-alter which means that the two side-pieces swing out to reveal more paintings on the inside. The wood carvings are almost life-size.

See the History of the St John the Baptist Evangelical Church for more information on the alter and the parish.

A6. Market Place, Neustadt an der Orla, Germany.
This picture of the Market Place within the village of Neustadt an der Orla, Germany was taken by the author during a year 2000 research trip to Germany.

During the morning hours and weekends this market place was thriving with busy shoppers. As many of our ancestors came from Neustadt, we can easily visualize family members searching for their requirements of the day.
